San Diego’s nature extends from the beaches and estuaries in the west to the desert in the east. In between are coastal sage scrub, chaparral, riparian woodlands, oak woodlands, and mixed conifer forests. Use FindNature to locate places to visit and enjoy local natural areas.
Children and adults alike enjoy learning the names of animals and plants. Now there’s a fold-out field guide just for San Diego’s most common shrubland species! The Pocket Naturalist Guide for Chaparral Shrublands of Southern California was developed in 2010 by the Collaborative, and a second edition was printed in 2011 by Waterford Press. Copies are now sold at local stores and nature centers, and used by students on local nature field trips.
