Mission Statement

The Mission of Ocean Discovery Institute is to engage, educate, and inspire youth from urban and diverse backgrounds through science-based exploration of the ocean and nature, preparing them to be tomorrow's scientific and environmental leaders. Our Vision is to empower youth from urban and diverse backgrounds to protect our ocean and natural environment, improve the health of our communities, and strengthen the quality of life in our world.

General Information

Ocean Discovery Institute science to empower young people from urban and diverse backgrounds to transform their lives, their community, and ultimately our world. The organization generates the spark that makes young people want to learn and empowers them to transform their lives through science. Young people learn through discovery. As they discover the world around them, they discover themselves and their future as scientific and environmental leaders. Founded in 1999, Ocean Discovery Institute has engaged over 34,000 individuals, developed more than 50 partnerships, and garnered a broad range of supporters.

The organization focuses on one geographic area, City Heights in central San Diego, working to connect an entire community to science and conservation. Annually, Ocean Discovery Institute serves 5,000 young people with tuition-free programs, and is growing to reach over 20,000 individuals each year. We believe that these young people have unlimited potential and want to make a difference. Ultimately, their discoveries will reveal new ways to protect the ocean and nature, improve the health of our communities, and strengthen the quality of life in our world.

Programs:
Ocean Discovery Institute hosts habitat stewardship events focused in urban canyons in the community of City Heights. This work is mobilizing the community to actively transform these canyons into safe and healthy places for urban youth to play, learn, and explore.
